replace characters

Dear friends,

I am facing a problem with greek characters when querying the database and extracting results.

In greek, 'Ù (accented omega letter) and Ù (non-accented omega letter) is the same thing. However when entering a keyword starting with this letter (with the accented one) I get results, with the non-accented one I don't (The entry in the db is with an accented omega)

Is there a way using php to get the $keyword and replace every character with a latin? for example:
{áâãäåæ}
{abcdef}
and replacing á (alpha) wiht a, â (beta) with b, ã (gama) with c and so on?
so the $keyword from Ùìåãá to become Omega

any ideas?

however the problem is that i don't know what will be the entered keyword by the users so I have to examine the $keyword and replace each character with its equivalent.
I think I have to make a loop which will replace character by character in any keyword entered. But to do this I must have specified the equivalent replacements
(if the keyword contains á replace it with a, if it contains â replace with b and so on)

Any ideas on that?
