When newbies show up asking why their global vars don't work on PHP 4.2.0+ - please don't tell them to turn register_globals on. They should be encouraged to use $GET, $POST, $_COOKIE etc, not just given the cheap, quick fix.

register_globals is off in 4.2.0+ because there are security issues surrounding variables registered in global scope - not just to make life difficult for people.

yes, I agree.
someone named Richard something helped me earlier, I do appreciate his help, but he did tell me to turn on register_globals. which I did for a while, then only a couple days ago found out about the $HTTP_POST_VARS etc and so I turned off register_globals and went back through my script and changed all the variables to use $HTTP_POST_VARS or $HTTP_GET_VARS, which ever was appropriate for the part of the script (for some forms I used post, some I used get)
