Calling MultiDim Arrays with strings

Here is an example of what I am trying to do:

$array[key1][key2] = 'something';
$key = [key1][key2];

print $array{$key};

I was hoping that "something" would be printed, but its NOT working. Is it possible to do this?

It is possible to do this:
$array['key1']['key2'] = 'something';

but it's not possible to do this:
$key = ['key1']['key2']; // this doesn't make sense. The [] operator cannot stand on its own - it needs an array on its left.
print $array{$key};

I figured that there must be some way to do this because this works:

$temp = 'string';
$new_var = 'temp';

echo $$new_var; //Will print 'string'

But it's different. Here you're dealing with variable variables. But in your original post you are dealing with indeces of arrays.

Ok, it's kind of complicated.

I want to make a directory browsing system that lets you navigate via select boxes. When you load the page, it gives you a drop down with all of the directires in it. When you pick a directory, it then refreshes the page and gives you another drop down with all of the new directory's directories. The files in each directory are printed as A HREFs in a little table below the select boxes.

The further you burrow, the more select boxes there are.

I have a function that gets a recursive directory listing starting from the scripts level and then working its way down. It returns a multidimensional array keyed by folder name.

The select boxes used for nagivation are named dropdown[]

Here is a better example:

$temp = 'something';
$var = 'temp';

echo $$var; //this will print 'something'

I wanted to do this:

$temp[key] = 'something';
$var = 'temp[key]';
echo $$var;

OR

$temp[key] = 'something';
$var = 'temp';
echo $$var[key];

But NEITHER of those works, which seems very silly to me
