link to file on users computer

I would like to create a link to a file on a users computer. I can get the $path but it shows up with two backslashes after the colon. e.g. c:\filename.ram I have tried using str_replace but get error messages everytime. How can I change this path or otherwise make this file play?

use $PATH_TRANSLATED
or $_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'] if register_globals is OFF

I feel really stupid. I just realized that all I needed to do was use the stripslash function.
