Passing special chars via GET

I need to be able to pass a string with special characters using the GET methord. You see, I'm processing it not by using a submit button, but rather by creating links with PHP that pass the values. The problem is that if the value has some special characters, it does not get printed in the new text box. Looking at the URL, it seems like the value is passed (but isn't displayed properly).

What special characters are you talking about?

Regradless you can always use different characters and them convert them back to what they should be once the next page is loaded.

Like if you wanted "@", you could use "AT".and then convert it back to the "@" symbol.

Or if you wanted "?", you could use "Q"..

Does that make sense?

I'm not sure exactly which will be used. So I was hoping there was some built-in way so I won't miss any.

I've tried using nl2br() and htmlspecialchars(), but it didn't seem to do the trick. Are there any other functions like these that would work better?
