REQUEST_URI is empty on some pages?

Hi, I've got a linux box with PHP 4.1.2 on it.. I need to access the contents of REQUEST_URI for a page-count thing. It works fine on most of the site, but in one particular section, scripts executed there always return NOTHING for $REQUEST_URI. I tried looking in Google and searching back through the archives here, but no joy. Any ideas?
