Can VB Winsock connect to MySQL?

Hi there,
i have a site, that stores members information such as username and passwords in a mysql table. I am making a basic instant messenger using Visual basic 6 and Winsock, the problem is, i need to varify the users login on the instant messenger application. Is there a way of remotely connecting to the mysql database using winsock? Or is there any other ideas people may have??

You can connect using WinSock, but unless you know the MySQL protocol you won't be able to communicate with MySQL. An analogy would be like putting you together with an Asian for example. You'll be able to exchange "talk", but you won't be able to understand each other, unless you both know one same language.
