How do i send mail if my SMTP server requires authentication ?

In the php.ini file all there is is this:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = localhost

Under windows php.net says mail() can take the smtp server ip as a parameter in windows, but still nothing about a login/pass. Can someone enlighten me please ?

The mail() function should work. I have contacts forms or I did setup that used the mail() function on my server, however I think my mail server doesn't require SMTP authentication so a solution would be to use imap_open() to open the pop3 based session then imap_mail() to send out the message. That should just about do it I hope. PHP Mail applications are not my strong point so this is all I can offer.
