Pick a date - closest date

Using MS SQL Server 7.0 and PHP, I have a table with Pay Day dates. You get paid every other week, so the table looks like:

Using 'datetime' format for this column
2002/6/13
2002/6/27
2002/7/11

etc.

I need PHP to go to that table and figure out what oay period we are currently in. Basically, it just need to check all the dates, compare it with today's date and print the closest one to today but not a date future to today. Simply: look at the dates in this table and find out which period we're in.

Brain doesn't seem to be functioning well tonight! Any help?

Hmm.. I'm not entirely ofay with MSSQL-Server's datetime functions, but something like

$today=date('Y/m/d');
"SELECT max(paydate) ... WHERE paydate<=$today"
perhaps?
