can't start!!!

hello everyone! hope you could help with my prob, i'm trying to learn php on my own so i bought this book by jullie meloni. enihoo... my prob is this, i keep on getting this message-- "'mysqld' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." or "'mysqld--standalone' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." everytime i type mysqld--standalone or mysqld --standalone. what could be the problem? btw... i have windows xp (home ed) as an OS, could this have anything to do with it?

Looks like Windows can't find the file you're looking for. mysqld.exe should be in the "bin" folder under your "mysql" folder. First find where your installation of MySQL is, the go to the bin folder and run the file. (If you're on WinXP, I think the right one to run is actually mysqld-nt.exe.)

thanks man! just did what you said... mysqld is not in the folder!!!! what should i do? should i re-install it? all that's in the bin folder are MYSQL, MYSQLC, MYSQLDUMP, MySqlManager, MYSQLSHUTDOWN, PERROR, isamchk, MYSQLADMIN, mysqld-shareware, mysqlimport, mysqlshow, mysqlwatch, and replace. that's it! i tried opening each, except shutdown and manager, what would happen is that the DOS windows would appear not less than a second and close automatically. i didn't have the chance to read what was in it actually. 🙁 thanks again.

Off-hand I think you'd get more appropriate help in a MySQL forum.

What you describe sounds like you should open a DOS Box first (Command Prompt, MS-DOS prompt, or wherever Microsoft is trying to hide it these days) and run mysqld-shareware (at a while guess) from in that (after first using cd to get into the appropriate directory).

Then at least the output from the program will sit around long enough for you to read it.
