periodically running of PHP

I'm trying to write a script that will run every minute, updating some stuff on my server, modifying some mysql stuff and the like.

I've searched the forums for this, and the only thing I could find was that I should use 'cron' in linux. The only problem is that I can't run anything on the server.

Is there any hope of accomplishing what I want without gaining shell access to the linux server?

The only thing I can think of is to try some kind of META tag refresh or some javascript.

But then you'd have to have a window open 24/7 running that. Its pretty odd for hosters who give you PHP on the server not to allow shell access, although most would frown on a minutely cron I think.

What kind of script are you running that needs that kind of maintenance anyway? Even on a fairly large site with 60gb+ transfer a month we don't go more often than 5 minute crons, and those are really just for updating array lists to ease the server load.

well, I'm trying to write a turn-based strategy game in PHP. A massive project, and not one I'm willing to start if I can't have it update certain values every so often...

My main problem is that I have to work without spending any money. I guess I'll go with a META refresh then, and just keep it running as long as I'm awake (my pc is in my bedroom, and it makes too much noise to sleep by🙂)

unless anyone has any other ideas, ofcourse 🙂
