2 things - String cases and removing cha

Hi, two quick questions which are probably stupidly easy to solve, but I can't work it out.

Is there a function to convert a string to lowercase.

Is there a function to strip out all the characters that can kill PHP such as ? marks etc.

But what does "characters that kill PHP" mean?

Sorry, should of been more specific, and there is probably another way around it.

I have got a preg_replace of user submitted data, and it screws it up when the user submitted data includes ? marks etc

Ah, you mean characters that preg_replace uses for regexp operators. That's easily enough fixed; just preg_quote() the user's submitted data first.
