Inserting Charators In Certain Places

Hi,
I have written an online email system, so I can check my email from work. Currently when I reply, it quotes the senders email at the bottom. I'd like to have this indented with a '>' to show its being replied to. Would the best way to do this be to insert a '\n>' so its starts a new line and inserts a >, every 50 charators or so? If so how do I take a string and insert another string at specified positions? Or if there is a better way of doing this, please let me know.

Ick, I hate it when the sender's mail is at the bottom.

My first idea is to use the wordwrap function to insert newlines at appropriate locations for a given width, then str_replace "\n" with "\n>".

Ah wordwrap looks like what I'm looking for! Sounds like a good idea.
