preg_match_all ex frm Manual not working

I copied the preg_match_all example below from the PHP Manual, added the <?php and ?> to the code.

According to the manual, it was supposed to print this:

part 2: click me

When I installed it onto my virtually hosted site, I got the following:

Parse error: parse error in /var/www/html/coastaloutdoors.net/dev_joel/reports/preg_match_test2.php on line 4

Does anyone have any idea why this example code from the manual is not working on my account? I tried the earlier examples in the manual. The first set PREG_PATTERN_ORDER and PREG_SET_ORDER seem to work fine, see http://www.coastaloutdoors.net/dev_joel/reports/preg_match_test.php

The one with the phone numbers did not echo anything.

Your first example contains a typo. My copy of the manual also contains the typo and the syntax highlighting function haemorrhaged "Unexpected character in input" messages. Whoever wrote the manual slipped up in proofreading.

Your second example won't have any effect because there is another mistake; why did you put $matches in there?

Oh, the typo in the first example? Missing " in line 2.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. With respect to the first part. I added a " at the end of the line --

$html = "<b>bold text</b><a href=howdy.html>click me</a>";

and got:

With respect to the one on the phone number parsing, I added the matches because I was trying to get the script to echo the matches. I tried the example in the post to the manual and got the following. Note: Everything is returning on one line as opposed to separate lines.

What I am trying to do is understand this matching business so that I can accomplish 2 different tasks. If you can help, I will post those 2 tasks in a follow-up post. Thank you for your help.

1 - Parse problem - convert my Matts BBS script to mysql

I have read the following threads on the DevShed forum (after searching through many, these appeared the most relevant).

Here is what I am trying to read and parse for placement into a mysql table so that I can make them part of my new message board and/or part of a FAQ.

Being new to PHP and programming in general, the different approached have me confused With respect to the 1st project, converting my flat file message board to a mysql table, I need to retrieve those from my virtual host. I know I need to open the file, read, preg_match and parse the variables, insert into mysql table, loop through this until all the files are read, but, I am very confused about how to do this, particularly with respect to preg_match the variables.

Please help, I hate to loose 2 years worth of message posts.

Here are the specifics:

This is what it looks like if I read from my local machine backup files (note: there is no extension on these files).

<P>Every now and then things just go right and this afternoon was one of those times. On the spur of the moment I decided to go fishing and was faced with an incoming tide which I usually struggle with. <P>The tide was high for catching bait , but I gave it a shot and with only three casts I had plenty of bait! Good omen. Since I was planning this trip as I went the live bait helped with the plan so I went to one of my favorite spots in a creek off of the Cooper River, a conjunction of three creeks with some strange currents swirling and nice drops. I put some baits on floats and some on the bottom. <P>Total catch was three nice spottails boated and several that got away, one trout, and one Striper. Strange thing is that the Striper was caught on a mullet fished on the bottom; surprised me. Most of the spottails were hooked very close to the grass as the tide was near full but still flowing strong. Short trip but good and all were released for another day, except for a few of those poor mullet.

#2 - Parse problem - convert my html reports to mysql
Here is the second problem. I only have the html backup of these reports on my local machine. I can move them to my local Apache, PHP, MySQL folders to run from localhost.

as for the one line business: it is actually returned on separate ones, but html doesn't care. without a < BR> tag, it will display everything on one line. check the source of your test page and you'll see what i'm talking about.

also, the example in the post worked fine for me. make sure that you get everything correctly. sometimes there are line breaks where there shouldn't be, which causes errors.
