Word Processing on a Web Page

I've got a page on an Intranet site I'm working on that will allow users to post help files. I don't want these help files to be text only, though; I want at a bare minimum for the writers of these help files to use bold, italic, font size, underline, hyperlinking, and creation of special characters (like bullets and lessthan/greaterthan). I've looked around for bbcode extensions but can't find any. Some of the users are of low technical sophistication, so I can't try to get them to use html. Furthermore, I'm worried about the security issues of letting the average joe employee write html on this intranet site.

What would you all recommend?

I'm sure there's several ways to do this but just a couple of suggestions would be:

1) write or find a Java applet that will allow you to do this. try http://javaboutique.internet.com

2)Use javascript to pass the values to a textbox such as at www.virtual-perceptions.net one of the forums here has where you can add smiley faces and the like. right click and view the script if its on the page.

Instead of someone writing you a script, look around. I know I've seen what you're looking for, but can't think of where at the moment.

Have you try mod_dav? It will allow your users to write their documentation like in MS Word; and then save them as html directly unto your web server...
