hello all

i apologise as this is a javascript question but ive been on a few javascript forums and im not getting any replys to what should be a simple question. I ask it here now because this is the best forum around

how do i open/read from a txt file using javascript ?

javascript runs on the client machine so as far as I know you can only access cookies through the browser (unless you use some nasty hack script). You could certainly use PHP to open/read the file and pass data into javascript, but only on the Server Side.

I had it working with php but unfortunatly the search engines wont touch it if its php ... i think it is possible to read and write, i have a sample in a book but it wont work ... its only three lines, but it wont work i dunno i just thought id ask and see if any one had done it before .

No; it's a rock-and-hard place problem.

Javascript runs on the client, so can't write text files on the server; while for security reasons it can't read or write files on the client.

There are ways of making PHP pages search-engine friendly. There are a couple of articles on exactly this subject on this site.
