Date/Time and Math

I want to create an if statement that says "if" the date and time now minus 5 hours is greater than the time in the database, then send you to this page to login in, "else" then send you to the admin section.

$sessiondate = the date in the database of when the user logged in last in ("Y-m-d H:i:s") format

$timenow = date("Y-m-d H:i:s"); - the current date

So where I am and having trouble is doing the math on $timenow and then comparing that to $sessiondate.

Your database system probably has some date/time functions for things like "minus 5 hours". To do it in PHP it's probably easiest to do the calculations with Unix timestamps, 'cos then you only need to deal with seconds.

$sessiondate_ts = strtotime($sessiondate);
$timenow_ts = time();
if($timenow_ts-$sessiondate_ts>=5*3600)
{ ...it has been at least five hours
}

To get the timenow - 5 hrs, use:

$timenow = time() - 36005 (or just simplify 36005 and put in that #)

then convert $sessiondate to a timestamp using strtotime or something similar.

OR: you can convert BACK $timenow using strftime and compare it directly in MySQL.

I think the latter method is the best since you can include the converted timenow string in the SQL query.
