Imagemagick and font width

I use imagemagick and a true type font such as "arial.ttf" to write a text on an image. I would like to know how can I determaine the text width so that I don't exceed the image limits (i.e. I want to determine the fonts width of my text in order to determine the pointsize of the font that would fit the image).

Any help please.

I've never used imagemagick. Can that be compiled as a feature with PHP or are you calling the imagemagick commands to manipulate your images?

If you find no other solution w/ imagemagick, try the GD one. You can either recode your program to use GD or you can use GD only to calculate the text boundaries and then use imagemagick to do the rest of the work
