Passing Variables & Sessions

I hope some one can help with this!!!!
I have managed to get my site to work on my machine at home but it not else where.

I can get the variable $dept to pass to the next page on the topbar menu options but not when I do a search in eg:- square I get failed opening messages as the variable has not carried forward.

Any Ideas

Drop the $ in the URL, should be something like:
http://servername/index.php?variable=something

Thanks for that, I tried removing the $ now not working at all I receive the following message.
Warning: Failed opening '.treemenu.php' for inclusion (include_path='')
