Securing your code - NEED HELP

Hi,

One of the sites I am working on has some very demanding requirements, one of which is they want the code made secure, that is they want it so that if you should ever get your hands on the source code, you will not be able to alter it.

This is because they have some unique features that would be valuable to other sites, and they are concerned about the source code becoming public, they had a problem with a server a few months back that allowed users to DL .php files.

So the question is, can you encrypt/scramble/encode/what-have-you PHP source code?

If not, then will you wonderful guys who wrote PHP, please add sucha feature - lol.

I am aware that this will come at a cost to performance, but they are willing to accept that within reason!
