Undefined variables everywhere!

I'm using PHP 4.2.2 DEV on Apache 2.0.39 I switched to these to see if they would resolve my problem from PHP 4.2.1 and Apache 1.3.29 (or something). My problem is when I attempt to pass a variable to another page using the get-style url.
EX:
http://www.mysite.com/mypage.php?myvar=myvalue
and on the page I attempt to print the variable (for testing reasons) like this
<?= $myvariable ?>
And nothing prints. I check my apache error.log and I get this:
"PHP Notice: Undefined variable: myvariable in C:\direcotry\myfile.php on line 62"
Even enviormental variables are undefied like when I try to do a link like:
<A HREF="<?= $PHP_SELF ?>?myvar=myvalue">Link</A>
Then I check the error.log and it says:
"PHP Notice: Undefined variable: PHP_SELF in C:\direecotyr\myfile.php on line 62"
What's the problem? Please help me.
I've tried the most simple methods aviable to see a value ex:
<?php
print("$DOCUMENT_ROOT");
?>
I get nothing. Please help...

umm... i think it's register globals yet again!

Edit php.ini and set register_globals to ON.

OR you can use $GET['name'] and $POST['name'] to get the values of get and post operations.

If the above solves your problem, i really do pity you having to upgrade to a newer version!
