a href to local dir

I want to create a hyperlink to a file in a local dir. I've tried using <A HREF="../dir">, but I can't go above the domain dirctory. How do I get to root of the machine and not the domain.

A more portable way is to use PHP's built-in variables, like $PATH_TRANSLATED

I think you mean the root of the server right?

Meaning, if in the server your docs are in /www/username, you want to get a file from /www.

There is no way you can go above a document root in apache unless you use symbolic links or use PHP to load the document (acting like a proxy).

But if you meant "local dir" as in the local directory on the client's computer, then follow what devin and Richard have suggested :-)
