coding a 'does domain name exist' thing?

you know on sites that offer domain names, they have a search thing which searches to see if a domain name is available. I want one of these, but I have no idea what language they are done in... Is it possible in PHP? If someone knows can they give me the code? If it's not in PHP anyone know what they are coded in?

The TLD Checker on the first link sounds pretty good. Try it and see!

One thing you should be aware of when writing your own WHOIS script is that recently registred (meaning within the past 10 minutes or the hour) may not show up on a whois server for up to 24 hrs... so you should consider querying multiple whois servers or using one of the root-servers for your query.
