hi all,
i was wondering if it is possible to run a php script in the background?

I'm setting up a mail manager, and i want to be able to set off a script that sends out emails to subscribers in batches and let it run in the background, so the user doesn't have to sit through while the emails are sent.

is this possible? ta,

you could run the script from cron - aka have the server run it every _ period of time. I did the same thing, but wrote a Perl script to do it

i don't have cron access. besides, i want the user to be able to set it off, and then have it run on a loop in the background.

i've currently got it setup so that the script displays an animated gif that says 'sending..', and this refreshes itself for each new batch. but i'd really like to be able to set it off and then have it run in the background.

you might want to read this:

and then what you can do is send the call to the background by ending the system command with " & " (the ampersand).

not being overly familiar with executing stuff on *nix servers, how would i use exec() to run a php script?
