making my chosen select element "stick"

Hi I have select elements defined as an array:

<select NAME="dob2[]">
<option SELECTED VALUE="">Day
<option VALUE="1">1
<option VALUE="2">2
...
</select>
When I chose an entry from my list the value chosen is passed when submitted but the form comes back with the default (Day) as my choice even though the chosen value is correct. How do I show my user what he selected? Thanks very much.
