how to check if a homepage exists or not

the homepage is on the remote server,not local.
how to check its existence

P.S.

I ever wanted to achieve it by apply " fsockopen",which takes a parameter "timeout".
but it seems not to work.

script still spends much time in running the code which line fsockopen locates
