PHP + XML = My Problems

I'm relatively new to PHP, but find it very enjoyable. Anyhow, I found Joe's article (http://www.phpbuilder.com/columns/joe20000907.php3?print_mode=1) a great read. However, my XML data includes characters such & and < and >. The translation works find except for the < and > characters. For some reason, PHP will deploy a <BR> and break apart my word. So, the word Kitty<Litter would appear as:
Kitty
<
Litter

Other character tanslations work fine. Any ideas?

I have tried with little success to parse
a very simple xml file.
I am using Windows 98/PWS with PHP 4.0.3
when checking phpinfo(); it does say
"xml enabled". Is there something else
i need to do?
My PHP setup is not cgi.
Is my version of PHP too old to
properly handle xml parsing?
And if my version is indeed to old,
does anyone know what i need to do
to 'painlessly' upgrade my PHP?
Is it best to totally uninstall it?
or is it better to dowload the upgrade
hoping that it (WIN98) will know not
to reference the old exe and use
the new one?
Any help would be appreciated.
