field in mysql with type timestamp

hello. I still have a problem with the dat field that has the type timestamp
no matter what i do, I tell it "not null" and when i have mysql describe the table, the date field (the one i have type as timestamp) is always null
when i go to add a record, i get a timestamp of, 00000000000000
whats wrong?

when you add a record, what do you enter in your timestamp field? try using a 0 or leaving it blank, mysql should automatically enter in the timestamp tho

i don't put anything in that field.

since this isn't working, im thinking of switching that field to the date type, but then, in my php code, do I enter something there or leave not even bother with it like if it were timestamp
could the problem with timestamp be to do with not being able to use time on this server i host my page on?(i don't use my own linux box.....yet

If you're not putting anything in, then you should have specified a default value for MySQL to use when you didn't supply one yourself. Did you?

no i didn't supply a default value.
I did notice something weird though, and maybe mysql does this normally, I don't know, when I specified that field as not null it set it to null anyway
is that why i'm getting all 0's?
