htaccess and userID's

Does anyone know how to do the following:

A user logs in to a page with a valid userID and password from .htaccess. How do you display what that person's UserID is on the protected html page?? Is there a way??

Any help would be great!

Preset var $REMOTE_USER contains the htaccess login ID, I think. Try testing with phpinfo().

I think Nik is on to something... but i'm not sure how to code it.
