Sorting by date

I am fairly new to the php, MySql thing and I need to sort my database table by date (relative to the current date)to place into and html table. I have used the other sort functions, but have not come accross a date sorting function. I was wondering if there is a simple funtion I can use to sort by date or do I have to code my own date sorting function. Thanks!!

Do the ordering in your select query

$q = "select * from t order by dateColumn";

What do you mean by

relative to the current date>>

thanks, I discovered the order by function shortly after I posted this.

The relative to current date means...
I have dates in the database from whatever day it happens to be(current date) until the distant future (the dates represent events coming up through out the next year).

so I would like to display the dates from whatever the current date is until the latest date in the table, but I think the orderby will take care of that as long as it can handle ordering by year as well.
