Right, let's roll:
Some of you may have noticed a flurry of posts regarding Ming (JPEG to SWF converter for PHP). Well, that was me and my hairline has diminished because of it. I've been trying to install it on Linux SuSE 8.0 for two days now, with little success. The binaries refuse to compile, SuSE installed everything in idiotic locations, there is little or no assistance and the windows version is unavailable for download. Arrggghhhhhh! Give me a rabbit to run over.
I love using Windows. It's quite simply a breeze. Forget all the bad geeky press. The GUI's are simple and installing app's couldn't be simpler. However, there is something about Linux which is appealing.
But, try being a web developer who is trying to set up a development environment in haste and then you should see that Linux is a pain in the arse. Forget RPM's, just do a manual install and then you know where you stand (fists clenched, over the fool that spilled coffee over your linux box just as everything compiled and the little echo 'yes' appeared on screen like a glimmer of hope in a world of darkness, deep).
Enough raving, here's how I slammed ming:
Linux:
If Apache and PHP is installed via a RPM then remove them using whatever RPM removal GUI is available.
Then download ApacheToolbox and install.
Select all modules required including GP and Ming. Job done.
By the way, the Ming module 'php_ming.so' will not work with anything other than PHP 4.0.6 / 7.
Windows: Download FoxServ2.1.exe from sourceforge and install. Uncomment the application=php_ming.ini line and change the extension_dir to point to your .dll directory.
Restart Apache, job done.
How's that! Now let the Linux vs Windows debate rest because let's face it, Windows is easier to use and Linux takes far more time to master. That's OK if you have no social life, no girlfriend, no hygene. But if you work as a web developer, then time is of the essence.
Peace,
GP
