validating and authenticating a form

hey everyone i have a couple of questions. the first one is — how would i got about making sure a user entered a valid email address or URL instead of just filling up the fields with jargon?

The second question is how do i pull a specific row or user information when they pass say a user authentication script where they just enter their username and password?
