Hidden characters

I've been having a problem with hidden characters in my mysql/php application.

Briefy, the mysql GROUP function was failing due to hidden characters getting into my mysql table somehow. phpmyadmin doesn't display any differences in the fields but if I read the table rows with php and ask for the strlen of the data it varies, even though the text appears exactly the same on screen. Are there any php functions that can help me to show ALL the characters (or a representation of them) so I can debug this problem further?

I need to see the slug before I can stomp it 🙂

You may want to do a trim($var) on your variables to remove any whitespace that is in the string - it donesn't aswer your question but just a thought
