Can anyone suggest a good tutorial for SSL BASICS with PHP?

I would like a simple understandable script that opens a secure test page. (Linux-PHP-apache)

For testing purposes can I do it with "self signatures" i.e. without paying money to the Certificate Authority?

I agree with you,
1- I'm absolute beginner in this subject
2- the question was not properly formulated

Let's try this way:
- If I want to display my secure page (www.example.com/index.php) using SSL, should the page contain any particular PHP coding for the SSL or should it be a normal page and the SSL function is handled only through the server configuration?
