Search Function

Hi Guys,
Basically i'm newbie, and I'm building a site that is going to have some dynamic pages. However, I want to throw in a search option for visitors to be able to search for contents (which will come from pages that I intent to house on mysql)

Like I said, i'm a newbie, so the problem is very simple: where do i start, what is the mechanism for this type of function, I have a brief idea of how to construct a search string that will search through a particular page but not how to search through the whole site.
