where to put php files?

Hi, I just installed Linux 7.3 on my system (i'm new so please be nice) so everything is still default. Apache is working ok, and i know that php is installed on my system. Where do i put my php files at so the server reads them? I was thinking in /home/var/www/html/ but when I do that and type in the address it just echos the code back to me. What am I doing wrong.

you need to make some alterations to your httpd.conf file. Or if you have already done them restart apache.

how is PHP installed?? As a module for apache or as a stand alone?

I don't know, like i said i'm new to this this linux thing and I really don't know my way around. I came with the red hat distribution. So however red hat has it installed. I looked through the httpd.conf file and it looks like everything is in place. I refers to everything under a module.

Also, do you have to associate files with programs as in windows so it knows the file extension. The reason I ask is that I downloaded phpMyAdmin and all the php files have a file type of unknown.
