Is this a good reg ex for zip code valid

this is how i read the above regx:
"a string that begins with and ends with 5 digits

please help!!!!!

umm... the standard format for a zipcode is NNNNN-NNNN

I\'ld use this:

ereg(\"^{[0-9]{5}(\-[0-9]{4})?\",} $this->zip);

I\'m not totally sure whether the hypen needs to be escaped or not (and the ? mark syntax).

Actually, just use the php function:
is_zip($zipcode = "")

umm... i don't think there is a php function called is_zip()... where did you find it? in the manual at php.net?

I'd really love for such a function to exist. It would be nice if it knew the format of the zip based on the locale set (so it will recognize UK zipcodes if the locale is set to UK).

no.. i think the webmaster of phpbuilder.com needs to use stripslashes() on every message before storing it into the database.. i think php automatically adds slashs to character quote, double quote within within a string, so we don't have to worry about adding the escape character ourself..

yes, i'm aware of that :-). I said bug because the board doesn't compensate for slashes added when the page returns for a name+email with the contents of the message.

well, this board is getting reeeaalllly old. phpbb 2 or phorum would be nice.
