Credit Card Transaction without CURL

Hello,
I have read many articles which requires installation of CURL for realtime credit card transaction.One of my friends has implemented realtime cc without CURL in a live server.Could anybody explain why CURL is important for realtime cc processing?

CURL allows you to pass data through HTTPS protocol. This connection cannot be sniffed as easily as HTTP. If you're dealing with sensitive data, you must use strong protocols.
