Help design an advanded hit counter

I need to design a bit of code that can be used in an include. More specifically I need this counter to save how many hits specific pages are being accessed, pages that have querystring addresses(ex. www.mysite.com/directories/listings.php?companytype=ph&state=ny)
I am not sure how I can best design a table in a database to make this task efficient and most importantly functional.

Please help. Any help, hints or tips would be great.

Josu-- so you want to count how many hits to the page, and you want to store any query string a db?

here's some hints.

first, that's two different tasks. first get the page counter working... be sure it accurately ups the counter each time the page reloads... and see that you can store it to the database.

then work on however you want to manage the query string... do you want to parse it before storing in the db? or just put the whole thing in the db? etc. think about the data format and how the data will be used... from that you can figure out what to code in PHP to do it.

finally, combine the two, so there is only one database call that writes out the page count and the query string information.

hi,

i did a basic one for my site last night, cos i dont get proper access logs. i wanted to know the 'history' of my hits for any time so i could see that someone went to index.php at 10:27am, 5 aug 02 and then went to whatever.php and know where they had come from and maybe even their ISP etc.

i figured i only really needed to know the following information:

pagename ($REQUEST_URI)
this iswhat their browser actually requested -
e.g. /index.php?foo=1&bar=2

hostname ($REMOTE_ADDR)
this is their ip address or that of their proxy server

referer ($HTTP_REFERER)
this is the page they came from

useragent ($HTTP_USER_AGENT)
this is the name/version of their browser - this way you can search engines that have visited.

datetime
this is harder that the others and uses the getDate() method which returns an array containing date and time (doh!)
