file upload timing out

Hi all;

I'm trying to upload largish (2-7meg) files over potentially slow (56k) connections. The problem is the upload keeps timing out before it completes the script. I'm using a two page upload, one for info entry, the other for handling the information.

Any ideas on how I can change the length of time for uploading?

You have to change the max_execution_time in the php.ini.

Unfortunately, it's not on my server, so I don't have the luxury of tweaking the php.ini.

Look into your php-manual for set_time_limit() 😃

My script is a two part, one with a form using method=post, & the other is a handler.

The manual says to use set_time_limit() as part of the script, but I think I'm going braindead & can't seem to get it to work. Where should I put it? I've put it in the php with the form & in the handler, but haven't seen any change in behaviour.

I have the same problem with the set_time_limit() function. I set the the time limit with that but then when I try to upload a large file it still times out and I get an error message that says it has exceded the max execution time of 30 seconds. I set the time limit to 1 hour (3600 seconds). Does anyone know why this happens?

Try:

set_time_limit(0);

This should disable the time limit entirely.

FYI, the command is best placed at the top of the action script (that is the script the form posts to)

I tried putting set_time_limit(0); at the beginning of my script and i still get the same error when I click the submit button. do u know anything else i can try?

Nah, my guess is that PHP is timing out at the upload, before even processing the script - which is a bit difficult to handle - I can't see any php.ini directive that will help either.

Maybe you should look at other ways of uploading the file (eg FTP)

You will also want to check the settings for :

post_max_size = 8M
upload_max_filesize = 2M

I believe the the above settings are the default settings for php.ini.

Gee Danny, you sure know how to brighten a guys day!

I've got this stupid script that works great... updates the db, uploads a couple of images & an mp3... aslong as the mp3 isn't too large... too large & it times out... Rats!

But thanks anyway... :-)
