Is it possible to use information in different tables to update rows in another table.

i.e.

update table set table.field = table2.field2

or what would be the best way of doing this with just sql...

That probably depends on your DBMS.
You could certainly do it using two queries and storing the value in a php variable. For example:

$sql = "select My_name from Users where user_id=10";
//execute query
//retrive result and store in variable $my_var

$sql = "update this_table set field_one=$my_var where this_id=1";

//execute query, etc

I'm pretty sure the only way you can do this is by using multiple queries as above or using subqueries if your db supports them (mysql doesn't)

yes it mysql db... and the prob with variables is that im running it from terminal connection, and for some reason mysql-commands dont work with php-files run from there... dont ask me why. It gives some error about undefined function or sumthing 🙁

So i would have needed just one query which would have done it.

I dont know if the mysql is compiled some wrong way (its my m8s server, and suspects that), but i dont know how i could get it working...

Sounds like PHP has been compiled without MySQL support (possibly compiled before MySQL was?) - any way a recompile should sort it.

Make sure you specify --with-mysql in the ./configure line, along with everything else you want.

mysql works thru web-server, but not when u run the files from command line...

Maybe you should post this problem in the Install forum?

Have you tried checking whether the mysql functions exist? It's possible php is configured to not load the mysql modules when run from the command line. Try loading the mysql module at the top of your script.

Make sure that you have enable_dl set to On (or true or whatever you use) in your php.ini-type file
