I've made a navigation bar. When a special cookie is set the bar shows some more links than usual.

Now, i log in, get redirected to index.php and the cookie is now set. Everything is working.

But when i click on a link in the navbar it sends me to index.php?pg=blah and the cookie seems to not being set and i don't get the special links. I refresh the page and the navbar shows me the extra links. Why?

I don't think it's an browser setting causing this problem, because this worked well with ASP so it shouldn't be that...

Your problem could be this. index.php is the script that sets the cookie, right? But when you go to index.php?pg=blah the cookie gets set again. However, due to the behavior of cookies, they aren't viewable until the next time you load the page, which explains why when you refresh it works OK.

If this seems like the case for you, change it so that if index.php is called with "page=something" the cookie won't get set again. That should fix your problem.

This is yet another reason why I believe cookies are tangible evidence of evil and why I don't use them on my site anymore. But that's just me. If you want to use cookies, more power to you for dealing with all of their quirks.

Well, I still believe with a little care they can still be useful.

I only use them for storing the sessionId of the user's session though.

The cookie is set at index.php?pg=com&sub=login so it doesn't get set again at index.php?pg=blah. I've also tried this with sessions and a database connection which checks if you are logged in and then sets an variable to mark that your are loggin in. Everything i've tried gives the same result.

What exactly is ob_start() by the way? Is it like setcookie() (sorry for sounding ignorant if I am)?

Ah I get it. Maybe that's causing the problem somehow. I obviously have never used that feature though so I wouldn't know :o.

I tried the database thing again on a linux server instead of crapy MS PWS and it worked!

I guess cookies whould work to..
