1st php script help please

I'm a real beginner, and am trying to load my first php script. I have a server - at uni which is php enabled, I am ftping my scripts across, what do I save them as - filename.php??? and where do I create them, can i just use wordpad or do I need a php editor? Any help or useful pointers to tutorials gratefully received.#

use the .php. Some people prefer to use php editors, but good ol' Notepad will do just file

Depends upon the version of php installed on the server and also how apache is configured to parse the php files.

you may need to name them .php or .php3 or even .php4

I started with good 'ol notepad too, although do a lot more of it now within HomeSite. There are lots of good text editors out there.

Avoid formatted "word processors" like wordpad and word etc.

I've tried doing it in notepad, saving as .php but when I TRY AND FTP it, it's saved as .php.text.
Also getting error message, method post not allowed - is this a problem with the configuration at the server end or a problem with my code?

When you save it, change the "Save as type" from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All files".

still saves it with the .txt stuck on the end, even when i chose to save as all types...

did you change the name from .php.txt to .php?

you could always rename it via windows explorer :-)

But yes, Piers is correct, when you save, drop the Save As Type option to All Files . then physically name it filename.php

For future reference....

When you are saving the file, put the entire filename with the extension in double quotes.

IE.

"myscript.php"

This will always avoid writing the extension to whatever default format you are working in.
