Just one more from me for now - is there any point in indexing primary keys, which very rarely follow WHERE clauses?? I tried this on a simple test query, and it seemed to slow the process down.

I assume you are referring to mysql.
Primary keys are already indexed with a UNIQUE INDEX! Use EXPLAIN or consult the docs if you have any doubts. Creating another index on a primary key only increases the query overhead.
