Where can I put my code?

I'm interested in learning about PHP, but I don't have anywhere to run scripts from.

I can't stay connected to the internet all the time, and my ISP webspace won't allow the running of PHP scripts. I'd also rather not pay for a place to run my PHP stuff from.

Does anyone know where I could find such a place to run my PHP scripts from, or have any other ideas for me? 🙂

You can:
1. Set up your own standalone web server on your PC and install PHP as well as MySQL (if you need database)
The best combination will be Apache, PHP and MySQL.
You can always use other web servers such as IIS, PWS, Xitami, etc.

You can register yourself at http://www.php50.com to get a free space to host your PHP application.

it is the best way to learn both about server admin and it allows you to develop without all the internet stuff...best way really, you develop the entire project and then post the whole thing to the net ready to go....

i use IIS and W2000, but it really depends on what you have at home...if w98 then just install PWS(personal web server) from the disk adn download php for windows....

don't use IIS, use apache from Apache.org

download the windows version of PHP then do this:
-extract the files into C:/php (so that there is a C:/php/php.exe)
-copy php.ini-recommended from C:/php into C:/Windows and rename it to php.ini
-add these 3 lines to your Apache config file:
ScriptAlias /php/ "C:/php/"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"

remember that to test your scripts you can just go to IE or Mozilla and type in localhost/filename.php
you can even test that when you're not actually connected to the internet 🙂

I have to agree that the best way is to set up your system as a web server with apache, php, mysql (and if you'd like- perl). The closer you can set up the file system to the system you are using on the net, the better off you'll be.

There are some good IDE's for win systems.
