Filesystem Question

Is it possible to get the serial number of the CD currently in the drive, or the local hard drive with PHP?

I'm trying to setup a mp3 system that allows offline media, and would like to be able to identify each cd uniquely, so when the user wants to play a song, the system can ask the user to insert a specific disc, and not just ask "please insert disc"

PHP as a server side scripting language does not have access to the local workstations, it has only access to the server on which it resides.

Thats fine, even if I can access the serial number of the CD in the server drive, that will be fine..

It depends on what you mean by CD serial number. PHP has access to the file system which is on CD, when you have an algorithm how to count CD SN, then you can write it in PHP or in C and call C program from PHP I think.

I'm not sure if you can get the name of media, but the simple solution would be to create a folder on that media and use php to retun the files within.

What I mean by serial number is as follows.

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>dir /w

Volume in drive C has no label
Volume Serial Number is 07D0-0B1B
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\Desktop

each cd/hard drive will have a unique serial number. Thats what I'm after. Maybe if its not supported directly, I'll write a c program to do it, but i'd much rather use php if possible.
