ereg() check help

I am trying to use ereg to check on a variable with this code

ereg("(^{[a-zA-Z0-9!@#$%^&])",$passwd)}

this works but now I have to check on the length,

I know this is also possible with ereg and I'd like to just use ereg for in and not make another check with

strlen($passwd) > 5 && strlen($passwd)<14

ereg("(^{([a-zA-Z0-9*!@#$%^{&]{5,14}))",$passwd)}}

is working for the first check if it contains any other that the characters in the check or is less then 5 chars.
But it doesn't get the last char check right.....

I can put in as much text in as possible and the check wil let me through.

Anchor the regexp at the end of the string as well as the beginning:

"^{[characters]{5,14}$".}

On the other hand, it's probably faster to check string length first and then ereg after - it's a lot cheaper to check for string length and decide it's failed than it is to build an entire regexp matcher and use that. And then you only need to build that matcher if the string is the right length.

The regexp can then be cheaper as well. You want it to fail if there are any characters other than the allowed:

if(!ereg('[^allowed characters]')) { failure

A much simpler regexp to be searching on (it only has to match one character instead of the entire string).

😕 I want to search a string containing this word "sync"

eg
"err,443345,sync.200.220.10.1,80"

is it applicable using ereg. And can anybody what the meaning for each of this special character

2) +
3) .
4) $
5) ^

thanks and if you other special characters to tell me it will be more appreciated.
