What am I doing wrong?

I have installed apache 2.4 on my winxp pro machine and i have got the latest update from php.net with the required php4apache2.dll file. Ive added the

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"

lines in httpd.conf, restarted the server, even restarted my computer, but still it wont run .php files.

I keep getting the error message:

Not Found
The requested URL /php/php.exe/webmercs/index.php was not found on this server.

Apache/2.0.40 Server at **** Port 80

Please please please will someone help me. Im tearing my hair out... 😕

Ok, Im going to take the risk of being ridiculed, but ive managed to solve the problem and I wanted to share it with all those who are having the same problem:

All I did was (in httpd.conf) comment out the

Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"

line and it has worked perfectly.

Sounds about right as the line you commented out was a combination of setting php to run as cgi and setting an extension Apache should parse for php code.
