While loop

I noticed that when I pull data from a table using a while loop I am always missing the first entry in the set. To solve it for now I have placed a Dummy entry into the database, which works fine for simple lists but when the query begins to ask for any number of combinations of fields it seems like that is not a suitable fix. I am sure that it is something I have done in the coding of the loop but ...

Any insights someone could share would he greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had this problem when I first started using mysql too. The problem was that I kept calling mysql_fetch_array() before I call it again in the while loop. Are you doing anything similar to that?

A sample for a working while loop ...

    mysql_connect("localhost", "", "") or die("could not connect");
    mysql_select_db("test"); 

$select = "select year, response, count(*) as count from demo group by year, response";

$test = mysql_query($select);
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($test)) {
      print "$row[year] total $row[response] = $row[count]<br>\n";
}

mysql_free_result($test);
?>

I am using MS SQL Server (I know...) and odbc_fetch_row. My Code look something like:

While(odbc_fetch_row($result)) {
$StudentID = odbc_result($result, 'StudentID');
etc. ...
};

I use the odbc functions all the time and have never experienced it "skipping" a row. Are you absolutely certain the row you think is missing actually matches the query criteria? It might help to post the database structure and your query...

I am pretty sure I am querying correctly and the data in the database is correct as well because when I add the dummy entry the missing row appears in the result set.

In your code, is there anything between the odbc_exec() and the beginning of the while loop that might increment the counter on the result set? Normally, only an test of the validity of the query should be between the execution and the while loop:

$sql="SELECT ....";
$result=odbc_exec($handle,$sql);
if(!$result){die('Query failed.');}
while(odbc_fetch_row($result)){
  #do stuff here...
  }

Could it be that I have the execute command in an include file?

Indeed, even into 2005.

My problem, which I found courtesy of this thread, was that I had this line inserted earlier:

$comrow = mysql_fetch_array($comresult,MYSQL_BOTH) ;

Which I had in place because Janet Valade's book told me to. 🙂 So if you're like me and using a newbie manual, you might want to see if you have a line like this in place.
