mail() not usable with >100 eMails @ the same time.

Hi again,

I´ve got another problem.
When Iám doing a newsletter sendout to 10.000 eMail Adresses the mail function blocks my browser for a very long time.
Anybody has a work around or an idea ?

Use a mailing list, that way you send your message to the mailing list and the list processing program does the work. You have to send one messages, not 10,000. 🙂

Send only 10 to 100 eMails, then let the script refresh with the latest executed assignee ID

I use MAIL for our mailing list of just over 700 and it takes about 7 minutes to read and write through them all. Kinda slow 🙁

Try sending with a socket to SMTP instead of mail(), a nice script to do this including MIME-mail is available on http://www.phpguru.org/mime.mail.html. I use it for nearly 6000 addresses, takes a few minutes on qmail with 100 concurrent TCP-connections. There also is a PEAR-version (http://pear.php.net), haven't tested this one. Of course a faster server, more bandwidth and making your mailserver accept more e-mails at once (max. connections) should work too.

Are all e-mails the same? Instead put the addresses in the BCC-header and send only one e-mail, your mailserver will take care of the rest. With several hundred or thousand addresses you should split this up of course.

Yes, I was going to suggest either using sockets or split the emails up, refreshing every 50 or so emails. Looks like the others beat me here. :p I do know of a mailing list program that uses sockets and is quite good if you are interested.

Think I´ll do sth like this.

Use the mail() command and 100 BCC´s per Mail

this makes with 10000 eMailadresses 100 mails and about 10 to 15 seconds.

I ran into this one too. Had to completely change all the timeouts for php and the webserver 🙁

Don't know if anyone's tried running the script as a command line script? I've not, but it did cross my mind (just not gotten round to testing it yet).

Might get round the timeout problem, though.

Be nice to know if anyone gets it working 😉

No, I can' say I have tried it from the command line. Though I would think that you would run in to the same memory issues that you would from the web, providing your host set memory limits. Like I said, I haven't run an intensive script like this from the command line so I'm only taking a shot in the dark here. 🙁
